Not in the sense of a reference book such as Duden, but more a book that can actually be read from cover to cover and which will impart the mysteries of not only Plusquamperfekt what a wonderful word! Does such a book exist? I would be grateful for any hints you may have. Thank you! It's entertaining and explains the most "popular" grammar mistakes made by Germans.
Of course, you should be able to read German Comment dirk: I'm afraid Sick's book is only useful for readers who have got a very good command of German. Have a look at some of them in a bookshop and chose one you like at first sight. Comment Aber sie sucht doch etwas Lustiges, zum Lesen.

Leider kann ich auch nicht helfen. Deutsche Grammatik ist einfach nicht besonders lustig. It contains a heck of a lot of useful information in a relatively compact paperback format. For an even more detailed and complete overview, people always recommend 'Hammer's German Grammar and Usage,' which seems to be the standard text in a lot of upper-level university classes. The 4th edition is in fact apparently also edited by Durrell, so I figure I don't need to buy it myself until I've absorbed everything that's in the shorter version.
However, while I haven't read it, my impression is that it was designed less as a systematic overview than as a series of clever comments on interesting points here and there, as an outgrowth of the Zwiebelfisch columns. So it wouldn't cover the kinds of mistakes made only by non-native speakers, though it would probably still be interesting. BTW, I wouldn't use 'have got' with an abstract noun like 'command.

Maybe it's just my ears that are at fault, but I would be curious to hear comments from BE speakers about concrete vs. Comment I agree with hm-us that Durrell's "Using German" is excellent and if you consider German a hobby even fun. This book helped me and continues to help me clear up a lot of confusion I had with certain aspects of grammar throughout my entire autodidactic German-learning process. Its textbook style format is best suited for those who learn from having things explained logically and analytically, as opposed to those who learn from observation or drilling methods.

I don't recommend it for beginners as their first German language book, rather as a reference to be used as you progress through the intermediate levels. It is indeed useful to beginners as a general reference, though delving deeply into the lessons would be a headache for most who haven't progressed past beginner levels.

The book is very concise and gives lengthy explanations and examples, so you're sure to understand the information given as long as you pace yourself and are a studious type of person. It even includes the most recent updates and those known to come to the language as of the published date Having not yet gone through the Fourth Edition I'm unable to review it, though I believe it to be equal to the Third as far as the learning format, and presumably the most recent updates to German as of have been included as well.
Of course no one book nor one learning method should be used in the learning process, but as far as having a concise manual in which to refer to while you learn as a beginner or progress through intermediate levels, I think this book or better even the updated Fourth Edition from is ideal. Advisably I don't recommended trying to learn any language quickly, and most books claiming to help you do so should be avoided, from my experience most especially with German as a native English-speaker. For what it is it's great, but it will make your brain sweat buckshot. View 1 comment. Professor Durrell based at the University of Manchester, has produced a comprehensive bank of German Grammar. The German axiom, 'Deutsche Sprache, schwere Sprache' is evidenced by the many finely rendered complexities Durrell threads into this grammar book. This grammar book is most certainly not for beginner learners.
When I first bought it, I struggled to understand many of the complexities of the language so the depth of Durrell's book was a little more difficult than I then required. Now I am studying at the post-intermediate B2 level, the real complexities of German grammar are clicking into place and with that my usage of Durrell's book has increased greatly. Dec 10, Cameron Coombe rated it it was amazing. Review of the fifth edition: Extremely helpful as a first-time German learner who also loves grammar my other friends found it a little dry.
